Over the years, out of
over 300 completed StarMurals, some projects just seem to
stand out as memorable. I thought I would take some space
here, and on the next page, to relate a series of short
stories that bring these Special Projects to
mindjust a few details and revelations that will
demonstrate some of the diverse options availableand
the unusual scope of my art.
Here are two of my most
favorite Special Projects, a rotating home and a
hospice for children, and, believe it or not, they are
both in fun environments that bring a special joy to their
viewers.
Rotating Home Mt. Helix
San Diego County, CA - 2003
This one was great. I feel
honored to have been chosen to contribute a very special
StarMural to this most unique private residence. Located on top
of Mt. Helix in San Diego, CA, the owners built their dream
home, a 5,600 square foot house that rotates 360 degrees, at
rotation speeds from once an hour to once every 24 hours, at the
touch of a remote control button. The StarMural I created for the
owners was painted in a domed 7 foot round ceiling section above
a 7 foot round whirlpool tub, pictured here. One of the
challenges was timing, as my work needed to be completed before
the installation of the tubscheduled for the following week.
The owners were very accommodating, including literally turning
the house, 180 degrees, before I arrived, to make for easier
access to the room I was painting. I doubt if thatll be
happening again!
When I first
visited their home the previous week, I entered
a sliding glass door and was taken on a trip through
the formal dining room, kitchen, and living room,
down a curving hallway to the master suite.
Turning right we traveled through the large bedroom
to finally arrive at the master bath, the location
of the project. When I arrived a week later
to actually paint the job, I walked through what
I thought was the same sliding glass doorand, to
my complete surprise, I found myself entering the
master bath. It took a few secondsbut then
it hit methe owner had actually rotated his entire
house, to make it easier for me to get in and out.

George Mark Childrens
House San Leandro, CA 2004
George Mark
Childrens House is the first childrens hospice
to be built in the US. This first class facility
provides end of life care, for dying children and
their families, it is truly the state-of-the-art
in this type of care. The entire facility
is full of fun and whimsical murals, and a variety
of great artcontributed by the artists who participated.
This beautiful $25 million hospice opened in 2004
and I was pleased and proud to be invited to contribute
a StarMural to the facility. I painted my
StarMural in a fun, touchy-feely, multi-sensory
playroom, called the Great Vibes roomand
have heard that the kids just love it and that it
is one of the favorite features of their facility
tours. To learn more about George Mark Childrens
House, and the necessary and wonderful work they
